Five input methods

Log Your Level However It's Easiest for You

Not every propane tank is the same, and not every reading situation is the same. PropanePal supports five ways to log your tank level so you can use whatever works best for your setup.

The most common method for large fixed tanks is the dial gauge percentage — look at the round gauge on top of your tank and enter the number. For portable cylinders, you can log by pounds, gallons, or by weight using a postal scale and the tare weight stamped on the collar. If you just want to note a rough level quickly, Quick Mode lets you tap Full, Half, Low, or Empty in one tap.

  • Gauge % — the number on your dial gauge, 0–100%
  • Gallons — enter gallons remaining directly
  • Pounds — for DOT portable cylinders, enter net propane weight
  • Scale weight — enter total weight and tare; app calculates gallons
  • Quick Mode — tap Full, Half, Low, or Empty

Reading history

Build a Complete Gauge History Over Time

Every reading you log becomes part of your tank's history. PropanePal stores each reading with the date, time, level, and input method. You can scroll through your entire history to see how your propane has been consumed, identify when usage spiked, and confirm that deliveries registered correctly.

This history is the foundation of PropanePal's prediction engine. The more readings you log over time, the more accurate your usage rate estimate and refill date prediction become. Readings from multiple fill cycles build the most reliable picture.

  • Every reading stored with timestamp and method
  • Scroll through full reading history
  • Inconsistent readings flagged automatically
  • Data stored locally on your device — no cloud required

No hardware required

Works on Any Tank — No Sensor, No Subscription Hardware

Hardware propane sensors clip to the bottom of your tank and measure the level through vibration or weight. They work, but they cost $100–$400 per device, require installation, run on batteries, and may not be compatible with every tank type or size. PropanePal works with any tank, any size, anywhere — because it's software-only.

You read the gauge the same way you always have. The only difference is now you log it in an app instead of trying to remember it. Over time, that simple habit gives you accurate usage data, delivery reminders, and a complete propane record.

  • No hardware sensor, Bluetooth device, or WiFi gateway needed
  • Works on any tank size: 20 lb cylinders to 1,000-gallon tanks
  • Works anywhere — cabin, farm, RV, home, generator
  • Free to start — no hardware purchase required

FAQ

Questions about logging propane gauge readings

How do I log a propane gauge reading in PropanePal?

Open PropanePal, select your tank, and tap Add Reading. Enter the percentage shown on your tank's dial gauge. The app timestamps it automatically. The process takes about 10 seconds.

What if my propane tank doesn't have a percentage gauge?

PropanePal supports multiple input methods. If your tank has no dial gauge, you can enter readings in gallons, pounds (for portable cylinders), or by scale weight using the tare weight stamped on the cylinder collar. Quick Mode lets you tap Full, Half, Low, or Empty if you don't want to enter numbers at all.

How do I read a propane gauge percentage?

Look at the round dial gauge on top of your propane tank (usually under a protective dome or cap). The gauge shows a scale from 0 to 100, representing the percentage of the tank that is full. Most tanks are filled to 80% maximum — this is normal and accounts for gas expansion. A reading of 20–30% means it's time to schedule a delivery.

Does the app work without internet while I'm logging readings?

Yes. All core features — logging readings, viewing your history, and seeing predictions — work completely offline. No internet connection is needed. The app stores all data locally on your device.
