Propane Usage Estimator

Enter your tank size, current gauge reading, and estimated daily usage. Get gallons remaining, days until your reorder threshold, and an estimated reorder date.

1% 20% — reorder zone 80% — full
Typical ranges: Home heating 2–5 gal/day · Cooking + hot water 0.5–1 gal/day · Grill 0.1–0.3 gal/session · RV all-in 0.5–2 gal/day

How This Estimator Works

This calculator uses three inputs to produce your estimate:

  1. Tank size — the usable gallon capacity (listed as 80% of the total volume, since tanks are never filled above 80%)
  2. Current gauge percentage — the reading from your tank's dial gauge
  3. Daily usage — your estimated gallons used per day

The calculator then computes:

  • Gallons remaining = tank capacity × (gauge % ÷ 100)
  • Reorder threshold = 20% of tank capacity (gallons at 20%)
  • Days until reorder = (gallons remaining − gallons at 20%) ÷ daily usage
  • Reorder date = today + days until reorder

Why Use PropanePal Instead?

This estimator requires you to know your daily usage rate — which most people don't. PropanePal removes that requirement by calculating your actual usage rate from the gauge readings you log over time. After a few weeks of regular logging, PropanePal knows exactly how fast your specific tank is being used under your specific conditions — and updates the reorder date prediction automatically every time you add a reading.

The estimator above is useful for a quick calculation. PropanePal is useful for ongoing, accurate, personalized tracking.

Track Your Real Usage in PropanePal

No more guessing your daily usage rate. PropanePal calculates it from your actual readings.
