Refill logging

Log Every Cylinder Refill With Full Details

When you refill a propane cylinder, log it in PropanePal before you head home. Record the date, gallons added, total cost, and whether it was an on-site refill at a filling station or a tank exchange at a kiosk. The app adds the entry to your cylinder's history and updates the level.

On-site refills and propane exchanges are both common. On-site refills at a filling station typically give you the full cylinder capacity (up to 80% of tank volume). Exchange kiosks like Blue Rhino or AmeriGas Exchange typically fill cylinders to 15 lbs instead of 20 lbs — PropanePal lets you log exactly what was received so your records are accurate.

  • Log refill date, gallons, and total cost
  • Distinguish between on-site refills and tank exchanges
  • Price per gallon calculated automatically
  • Notes field for any additional details

Refill frequency

See How Often You Go Through a Tank

Over time, PropanePal builds a picture of your refill frequency. For grill users, this might be every few weeks in summer. For RV travelers, it's tracked by trip. For cabin owners with portable backup tanks, it might be every few months.

Knowing your refill frequency helps you plan. If you're leaving for a week-long camping trip and you usually go through a tank every 5 days, you know to bring a spare. If you're heading to the cabin in October and you last refilled in August, you can estimate how much propane you have left.

  • Refill history shows dates and amounts for each fill
  • Average days between refills calculated from history
  • Per-cylinder history independent of other tanks
  • Useful for trip planning and provisioning

FAQ

Propane refill questions

What is the difference between a propane refill and a delivery?

A delivery is when a supplier truck fills your fixed, stationary tank at your property. A refill is when you take a portable cylinder to a filling station or exchange kiosk. PropanePal tracks both. Fixed-tank deliveries are logged under Deliveries; portable cylinder fills are logged as refills on that specific cylinder.

Does a propane exchange give me a full tank?

Not usually. Propane exchange kiosks (like Blue Rhino or AmeriGas Exchange) typically fill cylinders to about 15 lbs, not the 20 lb maximum capacity. On-site refills at filling stations fill your cylinder to its actual capacity (up to 80% of tank volume, per safety regulations). Log the actual gallons received in PropanePal so your usage history stays accurate.

Can I track multiple cylinders in PropanePal?

Yes. The free tier supports one tank or cylinder. With Premium, you can track unlimited tanks and cylinders simultaneously — add your home heating tank, grill cylinder, RV tank, and any backup cylinders as separate entries, each with its own history.

How long does a 20 lb propane cylinder last?

A 20 lb cylinder holds about 4.7 gallons of propane. For a standard grill at 30,000 BTU/hour, a full 20 lb cylinder lasts roughly 9–10 hours of cooking. Light use might stretch it to 20–25 hours; heavy use can burn through it in 5–7 hours. PropanePal tracks your actual usage over time so you get an accurate picture based on how you specifically use propane.
