Propane Usage Tracker

See Exactly How Fast You're Using Propane

PropanePal calculates your daily propane usage rate from the gauge readings you log. See how many gallons per day your household uses, understand seasonal patterns, and predict when your tank will need a refill — all from your actual usage data, not generic estimates.

Usage rate

Your Real Usage Rate — Calculated From Your Actual Readings

Propane usage varies enormously by home, appliance, season, and climate. Generic estimates from the internet may be completely wrong for your situation. PropanePal calculates your usage rate from the actual readings you log — comparing the level at one date to the level at a later date and deriving exactly how many gallons per day you consumed in between.

After a few weeks of logging, PropanePal has a reliable picture of your baseline usage. After a few fill cycles across different seasons, it understands how your usage shifts from summer (cooking and hot water only) to winter (heating plus everything else).

  • Daily usage rate calculated from your actual reading pairs
  • Accounts for deliveries and fills between readings
  • Improves accuracy as more readings are logged over time
  • Flags readings that suggest unusual consumption

Usage prediction

Know Exactly When Your Tank Will Need a Refill

Once PropanePal knows your daily usage rate, it calculates how many days until your tank drops to your reorder threshold (default 30%) and gives you a specific recommended order date. This isn't a rough guess — it's a projection from your actual consumption over time.

The prediction also accounts for a lead time buffer you can set per tank. If your supplier typically needs 5–7 days' notice, you can configure PropanePal to alert you that many days before the actual reorder threshold, so you never get caught waiting for a delivery.

  • Specific reorder date, not just "you'll run out soon"
  • Configurable reorder threshold (default: 30%)
  • Adjustable supplier lead time per tank
  • Confidence badge shows how reliable the prediction is

Seasonal patterns

Understand How Your Usage Changes With the Seasons

For most propane users, winter usage is significantly higher than summer usage. If you heat your home, cabin, or livestock barn with propane, January and February might use 5–10× more propane than June and July. PropanePal tracks this over time.

As you build up a year's worth of reading history, you'll be able to see clearly how your propane consumption changes with the seasons. This helps you plan for heating season — ordering a larger fill in October before demand peaks and prices rise, rather than waiting until February when demand is highest.

  • Usage history shows consumption across fill cycles
  • Reveals seasonal variation in daily usage rate
  • Helps you plan pre-season fills before prices rise
  • Works for home heating, cabin, farm, and RV use cases

FAQ

Propane usage tracking questions

How does PropanePal calculate my usage rate?

PropanePal compares the tank level between any two reading dates and calculates how many gallons were consumed in that period. It then divides gallons consumed by the number of days between readings to get your daily usage rate. Deliveries and fills are accounted for so they don't inflate the consumption calculation.

How many gallons of propane does a typical home use per day?

It varies widely. In winter, a home using propane for heating typically uses 2–6 gallons per day depending on home size, climate, and insulation. In summer with only cooking and hot water, usage often drops below 1 gallon per day. PropanePal tracks your actual usage so you get the real number for your home, not a generic estimate.

Can PropanePal detect if my propane usage suddenly increased?

PropanePal will reflect a change in usage rate in its predictions. If your daily usage rate is significantly higher than your historical average, the app's predicted reorder date will move earlier. An unusually high usage rate can sometimes indicate a problem — such as a pilot light that won't stay lit, a heating appliance running inefficiently, or in rare cases a leak. Always follow proper safety procedures if you suspect a propane leak.

Is there a propane usage calculator I can use?

Yes — see our Propane Usage Estimator tool. Enter your tank size, current gauge reading, and estimated daily usage to see how many gallons you have left and when you should plan your next order.
